I've been listening to a lecture from the Reformed Theological Seminary entitled "Preaching Christ in a Postmodern World." One of the topics they discuss is how constantly throughout the New Testament the things that Jesus says and does, even the places he goes have precedence in the OT. Too many to mention really.
This got me to thinking. I enjoy a good argument/debate. but if I am going to get into one I like to know both sides of the argument.
These are to point to the Jews that this is the messiah you've been waiting for. He is the one. He is here to save you. Everything has a parallel in the OT.
There are lots of groups of people who think that Jesus never existed. There's no record of him. Even when I was pagan I didn't believe this. Some say there was a conspiracy to take control of people and rule them through their control and knowledge of theology.
If everything Jesus did having a parallel in the OT points to him as the messiah, is it not also plausible that these actions were picked deliberately from their text to create a character to act as false messiah in order to take control of poor uneducated people? Is it at the very least plausible?
I think it is. Just as easily as there could have been a man 2,000 some years ago that died on the cross at the hands of Roman opposition in order to redeem mankind in the name of Almighty God, it is just as plausible that these same people created a character using situations and actions of other characters from the Hebrew Bible to create a messiah.
This question requires is faith. Faith makes the one seem more plausible than the other. however, you can't get caught in the trap of denying something simply because it doesn't match up to your own belief system. I recognize that it is entirely plausible that Jesus Christ is a fictional character created to control the people of the time. And if this is the case then they have done well for centuries.
Faith, however, tells me that Jesus Christ came to earth to teach and redeem mankind. That he chose to give himself over into suffering and death so that he could conquer sin and evil in this world. Faith is the missing link and it is what brings us to God.
